Black Obelisk

Day two and I’m already behind. I didn’t post the first track until about 11:30 PM, and then worked into the wee hours only to realize nothing worthwhile. When listening to the various sketches this morning, nothing really seemed like it would gain traction. So I decided to work on the website, writing my post for day one, as well as day one of 2024. I’m sure this will come as a massive surprise to anyone who knows me, but I’ve kind of made my entire process overly complicated. I like what the end result is, but it’s a lot … Continue reading

This Isn’t What You Think It Is

Despite my best intentions to start reasonably early in the day, dog sitting and hanging out with the neighbors led to me not getting this one rolling until later in the evening on the 31st. Once again, I’m trying to work a day ahead. And in increasingly typical fashion, the song you hear today is a completely different one from what I was initially working on. This often happens to me and in the past, I would have just trashed the original project. The normal process is I find a sound or melody or hook that sounds interesting and start … Continue reading

Those Who Crossed the Line

Note: This post was written in 2025 and backdated to appear on the day I wrote and published the track. This is my third attempt at completing 29 tracks during a leap year. The two previous leap years were interrupted by travel, but I was able to carve out the entire month this year. It ended up not being as much of a hurdle as I thought, though I’m quite certain it would have been more intimidating in 2016 or 2020 because I hadn’t yet hit my “I can do this” stride. After the production excess of Red Hill Danger … Continue reading

Red Hill Zone

Note: This post was written in 2025 and backdated to appear on the day I wrote and published the track. As the Pythons would say, “and now for something completely different.” If you listen to the month’s playback in sequence, the appearance of this song directly after the thunder of Mare Marginus fades out is like getting in the car in the morning and having the radio at full blast because you forgot you’d lost most of your hearing at the concert the night before. While I don’t remember the exact impetus to do this style of track, I strongly … Continue reading

Mare Marginus

Note: This post was written in 2025 and backdated to appear on the day I wrote and published the track. I tend to have a pretty strong self-deprecating sense of humor. I’m not sure if that’s a defense mechanism, an outgrowth of my early humility training by my parents, a natural extension of my sarcasm, or some deeper psychological thing that some therapist would like to talk to me about because they need to send their kids to college. To expand on the “humility training” thing a bit, I started acting in (little) musical theater at age seven and was … Continue reading
