Wintry Mix

The first real winter storm of the season has arrived. In an effort to get one more exercise session in prior to the snow and ice showing up, Olive and I went to the dog park right after breakfast, and it started snowing while we were there. I wasn’t expecting anything to stick, much less stay frozen for long, but the buildup was surprisingly fast and by the time we got back home, I was already having a few traction issues driving the truck.2Later in the day, I would experiment with 4×4 mode on … Continue reading

Convocation

Rather than immediately jump into writing today’s track after finishing yesterday’s, I decided to take the night off and hang out with the neighbors, go to bed early, and get some more sleep. While Mary’s gone, I’ve been trending more and more toward doing the bulk of the work on the day it gets posted instead of doing most of it the day before with only a quick polish in the morning. Part of my reason for working ahead is that it takes some of the pressure off – I always have a little slop time at the end if … Continue reading

The Gathering

Wow. Full disclosure – I’m writing this entry on February 15 (and will be doing so for the next few). Mary was on business travel for a full seven days, so I’ve been taking care of our new puppy, Olive. She’s currently nine months old, and I’ll be writing about her more extensively in a later post, so just suffice to say that I’m behind on the blog. I’ve also given up on trying to also write entries for 2024… that will have to wait for March. I really enjoyed writing Lights in the Mist and, after posting it, the … Continue reading

This Isn’t What You Think It Is

Despite my best intentions to start reasonably early in the day, dog sitting and hanging out with the neighbors led to me not getting this one rolling until later in the evening on the 31st. Once again, I’m trying to work a day ahead. And in increasingly typical fashion, the song you hear today is a completely different one from what I was initially working on. This often happens to me and in the past, I would have just trashed the original project. The normal process is I find a sound or melody or hook that sounds interesting and start … Continue reading

Red Hill Danger Zone

Note: This post was written in 2025 and backdated to appear on the day I wrote and published the track. In past years, I’ve had “requests” come from friends to try different styles or write about specific topics. One of the most successful of these was 202’s Spicy Bee. I never guarantee that I’ll actually take the request – Song-A-Day is already stressful enough on its own without having to satisfy an audience, and inspiration isn’t always a predictable thing. I do, however, try my best to at least give   it a try. This year, the request was “do … Continue reading
