I Will Provide

Note: This post was written in 2025 and backdated to appear on the day I wrote and published the track. If Give It To Me was a swing and a miss, this track turned into a triple. I’d continued to noodle with the guitar over the last three days and was looking for a way to use it again. I loaded up a rock kit in Superior Drummer 3. I’m not sure I would have attempted a song like this if I were programming the drums. I might have done something using Stylus RMX, but … Continue reading

Mare Orientale

Note: This post was written in 2025 and backdated to appear on the day I wrote and published the track. This entry to the Mare series brings back some direct, rather than implied, rythmic elements. I didn’t want to be an outright beat, but rather a soft accompaniment. It’s not compositionally complex, but I think the length of each chord keeps things moving without taking away the languid pace and space to absorb. The backing pads, noise washes, and granular effects provide ongoing variety, becoming much more involved than the primary pluck sounds. I didn’t use many of my ambient … Continue reading

Note: This post was written in 2025 and backdated to appear on the day I wrote and published the track. I almost started this post with, “Well, here we go back to Lo-Fi Land” except that I realized this track was actually my first intentional flirtation with the genre. I say “intentional” because I’ve been writing these types of tracks for years and years, but I always called them beats, demos, or sketches. They certainly weren’t complete works, but something to be fleshed out later. Then I discovered the Lo-Fi station on Apple Music (there are similar ones on any … Continue reading

Mare Anguis

Note: This post was written in 2025 and backdated to appear on the day I wrote and published the track. This visit to the Mares is another drone. Once again, the Slate + Ash libraries are the stars here, and I began warming up a bit more to Spectres. It’s still my least favorite of their libraries, but as I poke more through the content, I’m finding usable things. In this case, the main drone sound and the “lead” sound that becomes prominent about halfway through are the same sound, but I used two separate instances. This allowed me to … Continue reading

Give it to Me

Note: This post was written in 2025 and backdated to appear on the day I wrote and published the track. Ohhhhhh what to say about this one? It’s one of my “swing and a miss” tracks – what I had in my head was pretty cool, but the final result is definitely lacking. On the positive side of things, I think the riff of the hook is pretty solid. Maybe not crazily original, but it gets the job done. Also, I actually played it on guitar not once, but multiple times (there are four guitar tracks: two left and two … Continue reading
